Making DIY Fruit Bubble Tea

Updated on March 4th, 2024

It is officially Spring, and I wanted to share the bubble tea kit I bought and how to make fruit bubble tea yourself, which would be the perfect drink for the warmer weather.

One of the bubble tea cafes in Copenhagen, Tea:licious Cafe sells a bubble tea kit, and since Denmark is still in a partial lockdown, it has been a while since I have been to Copenhagen so I decided to buy the kit to make my own bubble tea. The kit can only be shipped in Denmark, but if you bought all the ingredients in your country, you could make bubble tea yourself.

The fruit bubble tea recipe below makes 1 portion.

Ingredients

All the fruit bubble tea ingredients as the bubble tea cups and straws
  • 1/4 cup of fruit syrup (I chose peach-mango and passion-mango, but you can use any fruit syrup flavor such as strawberry, blueberry, cherry, apple, lychee, etc.)
  • 1/3 cup of popping boba pearls (I chose mango and passion, but again, you can choose your own flavor)
  • 1 tablespoon of loose-leaf jasmine green tea or Assam tea (you can use other teas as well, but black or green teas are the most common. You can also use 1-2 tea bags instead if you do not want to use loose-leaf tea)
  • 1 cup of water
  • ~10 ice cubes

Note: It is also common to use tapioca pearls instead of popping boba pearls, which you can purchase from some stores or online. However, you will have to boil the tapioca pearls before using them, unlike the popping boba pearls which require no cooking. If you decide to use tapioca pearls, read the directions on the packaging for how long to boil them as the cooking time may vary. It is also common to use milk and sugar if you are using tapioca pearls.

Along with these ingredients, you will also need:

  • A tea filter if you are using loose-leaf tea
  • A mug to brew the tea in
  • A shaker or a cup with a lid
  • A large glass for the bubble tea
  • A jumbo straw

Directions

The peach-mango bubble tea with mango popping boba pearls

The directions are divided into three parts – brew the tea, make the fruit tea mix, and assemble the bubble tea.

Brew the Tea

  1. Boil 1 cup of water (it is easiest to use an electric kettle, but you could use a stovetop kettle or even the microwave )
  2. Pour the water into a mug
  3. If you are using loose-leaf tea, place 1 tablespoon of either the jasmine or assam tea into the tea filter (you can of course use more tea if you want a stronger tea flavor)
  4. Place the tea filter or 1 tea bag (or 2 tea bags if you want a stronger flavor) into the mug
  5. Let the tea steep for at least 5 minutes

Make the Fruit Tea Mix

  1. After the tea has steeped for 5 minutes, place the fruit syrup into the shaker
  2. Take the tea filter or tea bag out of the mug and pour the tea into the shaker
  3. Add ice cubes (I used about 5-10 small ice cubes)
  4. Place the lid on the shaker and shake it to mix the syrup and tea

Assemble the Bubble Tea

  1. Add the popping boba pearls into the glass you are using for the bubble tea
  2. Add in 3-4 ice cubes
  3. Pour in the fruit tea mix from the shaker
  4. Place your jumbo straw in the glass
  5. Enjoy!

I tried a brown sugar bubble tea once and absolutely hated. I think it may have just been the place I ordered it from, but I am scared to even try it again. Which sucks because it’s all that people rave about these days.

Maybe I’ll get up the courage to try it again one day. And I hope it will taste better.

I’m sorry to hear you hated it! I do think you should give it a try again and maybe go a different place and order one of the fruit bubble teas!

These look delicious! There is a really good boba shop not far from where I live, so I visit often. I never thought to try and make my own at home, but now I think I will. It looks like fun.

Yes I’ve had the tapioca pearls years ago & I liked it, but I do prefer the popping pearls!
